BEYOND THE BASICS Parenting Group: Training for Facilitators

• Beyond the Basics is a parenting group developed by Aisling Discoveries Child and Family Centre. The program is aimed at parents of children under the age of 6 who are involved with a child welfare agency. These families often have special needs with respect to parenting, especially in situations where their children may be in care of a child welfare agency or where the parents are under a supervision order from Family Court. Training for facilitators is required prior to delivery of this program. Approximately 8 hours of training is available through Aisling Discoveries Child and Family Centre. A manual detailing program delivery, philosophy, and handouts is included in the training costs.

• Research evaluating the effectiveness of Beyond the Basics Parenting Group was funded by the Centre of Excellence for Child Welfare in 2003-2004 and study findings support that BBPG is effective in advancing parent’s knowledge about children, BBPG assists in changing harmful attitudes and parenting practices, and BBPG has high recipient satisfaction. • Beyond the Basics has been operating since 2001 in the Toronto area and continues to meet a pressing need in the community. The program has been presented at several conferences and training has taken place across the country.
