TPAS Program Manager Darryl Nurse is responsible for overseeing the work of six teams, made up of 55 employees in all. From intake through to discharge, it’s his job to see that the program is run successfully. In Darryl’s view, this means ensuring that, aside from providing treatment, the program also helps families come to terms with their child’s diagnosis, assists them in getting connected with other resources, and ensures they have a solid plan to take them into the future.
“It’s a little busy,” he says of his typical day, “and it’s ever-changing.” From dealing with staffing and schedule changes, to payroll and budgeting issues—not to mention working his way through a seemingly bottomless e-mail inbox—Darryl says each day is different, but equally demanding.
This is especially true because of the way the TPAS program is constantly changing. Since 2002, when the TPAS program began at Aisling Discoveries, they have grown from one team to six. “There’s continuous expansion,” says Darryl. “It can be difficult to maintain some consistency within an ever-changing environment.”
But, at the end of the day, when he watches the children excel, and sees their families learning to help themselves, he knows it’s all worthwhile—and the pride he takes in his team’s success is obvious. “The staff make the largest impact on the clients we serve,” he says. “They see the kids all day, every day. Our outcome studies are phenomenal, and that speaks to the great work they do.”
