Child Care Consultation

The Child Care Consultation program serves children, their families, child care professionals and home care providers in Scarborough by promoting the optimal role of child care professionals in the identification and management of children with special needs. This program is funded by the City of Toronto Children’s Services Division under its “Every Child Belongs” program.

Our agency has responsibility to provide service to a “cluster” of child care centres. In addition, the Centre manages an Intensive Resource Support program which provides direct service to identified children and centres throughout Scarborough.

Services provided to the child care community include: intake; telephone consultation; observation and screening of children in centre and home-based child care settings; behaviour management support and training; workshops for child care staff and parents; short term counselling for families; parent groups; support to staff and supervisors in child care centres; and community education regarding preschoolers with special needs.

The program goals are to enable children to function more successfully in all social contexts (home, school, child care setting, neighbourhood); to assist families in establishing and achieving their goals for the healthy social and emotional development of their children; to enhance teachers’ and caregivers’ knowledge and skills in dealing with difficult behaviours and emotional problems; and to encourage partnership and communication between parents and caregivers.
